St. Augustine

Camping Trip

After having such a good time on Jekyll Island we decided to camp in St. Augustine FL.  We stayed at Anastasia Island State Park, site 104.  It was the only site available when we made reservations.  We were worried.  Boy were we pleasantly surprised.  It was nice and private with plenty of room.

After setting up the campsite we drove to the beach.  It was cold and windy.

The boys were so excited to be at the beach the started dancing and jumping.

We played on the sand and got cold and windblown.  We headed back to camp for dinner and a campfire.

The next day we headed to downtown St. Augustine.  It was a very cold night.  40's.  So we were ready to warm up in the sun.  Wyatt came up with the idea to tie string around his palm leaf to make it look like a broom from Harry Potter.  Jeff just happened to have string in the camping gear box.  A little string and Wyatt was off.

After breakfast we were going straight to the St. Augustine History Museum.  We had won tickets in an auction at Wyatt's school last year.  When we drove by the Huguenot cemetery we noticed it was open.  It is RARELY open.  We flipped out and parked the car to go inside!

They had erected small American flags for the military deceased buried there.  It was a beautiful morning.  We enjoyed reading each of the headstones.  Many babies were buried here due to yellow fever and cholera.

After the cemetery we went to the museum.  We each wrote our names on paper using feather pens and ink.  Even Ryan wrote his own name.

Ryan's signature can be seen in the upper left side of the picture below.

We finished the museum and headed back downtown to our favorite place, A1A Ale works.  Their iron railing sits with a view of the bridge of lions.

After lunch we walked around St. George and the area.

Ryan showed of his pirate booty.

We headed back to the campground and rode our bikes out to the beach to play in the sand and fly kites into the sunset.

While Jeff was flying his kite Wyatt decided to fly his too.  Then another boy who was on the beach with his mom flew his kite too.  There were 3 kites flying all around.

As the sun set Emily took shots of the kite in the sunset.

We went back to the campsite and had dinner.  We sat around the campfire and listened to the Gator Football game on an AM radio.  The next day we rode back to the beach.  Rode ON the beach and made a base camp for a couple hours.

We packed up our campsite and headed over to Fiesta Falls Mini Golf course.

We play this course every summer.  The boys love the pirate ship.  It was cool to see it dressed up for the upcoming holidays.

After golf we headed home.  We had yet another wonderful camping trip.  Next time we will try to stay more than 2 nights.  We want to get more use out of the campground.

We are planning another trip here in February and a 4 night camp in Fort Wilderness Campground at Disney World in April.
